Jeporeka Project

The song, our portrait

About the Project

Jeporeka is a space that promotes the development and encounter of Paraguayan musicians. Imagined by Berta Rojas, with the support of the Itaú Bank and Foundation, it is a project that seeks to bring together and support young Paraguayan music artists, and put them in contact with masters who stimulate and guide them in the creation of new musical works. In the first edition, carried out during 2020, 11 young composers created "Pytũ Mimbi" (Brightness in the darkness", a collective musical work inspired by reflection and feeling in these times of pandemic, finally captured in an audiovisual record of great care and quality. From Jeporeka we invite young Paraguayan musicians to a new adventure during 2021.

Why "Jeporeka"?

Because it defines the character of this meeting that invites to the search, and to the reflection on what we are from tradition, and where we can go with innovation. The objective of this musical encounter is to observe and create in absolute freedom, breaking down and combining tradition with elements of contemporaneity. The invitation is to a musical "Jeporeka" that will result in a collective creation that is a reflection of this time, its challenges, and the hope that unites us.

Jeporeka 2021 - The song, our portrait

In the 2021 edition, we work on the interaction between two ideas/forces:

Song as an expression of the people The great plastic works of Paraguay The song

A song can be created and performed by the same person. But it also often happens that a composer creates the music, an author creates the texts, and then it is interpreted by a singer. This collective exercise of creation is what we wanted to propose in Jeporeka 2021. To do so, we invited everyone to participate in three categories, COMPOSER (creator of the music), AUTHOR (creator of the lyrics) and SINGER (vocal performer).

Ten participants in each category were selected through an exercise. The Jeporeka teachers formed teams composed of a composer, an author and a singer, who worked together to create and record a new song, encouraged and guided by a team of outstanding professionals.

Plastic works

The process of group creation was simultaneously crossed by the stimulus of the great plastic artists of Paraguay. To this end, we proposed to the participants of JEPOREKA 2021, a virtual tour through 30 works of great creators of the Paraguayan plastic arts, so that each team could choose the work that inspired them for the composition.

How was the Jeporeka 2021 adventure?

Each team created a new song, during a 6-week work process, with the support and supervision of 6 teachers (2 for music, 2 for lyrics, and 2 for vocal interpretation) who worked with all the teams in the form of group meetings as well as individual classes.

The resulting songs were captured in a high-quality audio recording, with the availability of professional musicians, studio and producers, and then an audiovisual for each of the 10 resulting songs.

A Cultural Council made up of 4 great referents of our country, accompanied and supported this process of collective creation, with their experience and vision of the Paraguayan identity.

Application and Selection Stage

From Jeporeka we have thought of an exercise for each category, which all applicants had to perform. These exercises were based on the guarania REGALO DE AMOR, by Don Mauricio Cardozo Ocampo. Although these exercises were MANDATORY to apply, they did not represent the end of the project but the way to evaluate all the applicants on equal terms, and thus choose ten participants in each category, which are those who were then part of the whole process of Jeporeka 2021.

What were the categories to apply for?

All artists wishing to participate had to register in at least one of these three categories:

COMPOSER CATEGORY

AUTHOR CATEGORY

SINGER CATEGORY

OBS: An artist could register in 2 or 3 categories, although if selected, he/she would only participate in JEPOREKA 2021 in the category where he/she had the best performance according to the selection jury. JEPOREKA ONLINE MUSICAL MEETING
